Tarawih comes from a word for resting, because the early Muslims paused between every four rak'ah. Communities pray eight or twenty rak'ah, often completing the whole Quran across the month. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever stands Ramadan in faith and hope of reward has his past sins forgiven.
