What does Imam mean?

The one who leads the prayer; also a leading scholar.

Imam explained

In prayer the imam stands in front and the congregation follows his movements. The title is also given to the great scholars of the ummah, such as Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Malik, Imam ash-Shafi'i and Imam Ahmad, and to the leaders of a community.
