Al-Hajar al-Aswad explained
It came down from Paradise whiter than milk, the Prophet ﷺ said, and the sins of men blackened it. Pilgrims kiss or point to it at the start of each circuit. Umar kissed it saying: I know you are a stone that neither harms nor benefits, and had I not seen the Prophet kiss you I would not have.
