A letter, ten rewards

Sunday, July 27, 2003

Transliteration

Man qara'a harfan min kitabi-llahi fa-lahu bihi hasanah, wa-l-hasanatu bi-ashri amthaliha, la aqulu Alif Lam Mim harf, wa lakin alifun harf, wa lamun harf, wa mimun harf.

Translation

Whoever reads one letter of the Book of Allah will have a reward, and a reward is multiplied by ten. I do not say Alif Lam Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Mim is a letter.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud·Sunan at-Tirmidhi 2910
Reflection

The reward is per letter, not per page. A short sitting with the Quran is hundreds of letters. The maths is the most encouraging in any book.

One saying of the Prophet ﷺ a day.

Pair this with the daily verse, the 99 Names, and a few beads of dhikr. Small things, repeated, leave the deepest mark.
