Charity to family earns two rewards

لَهُمَا أَجْرَانِ، أَجْرُ الْقَرَابَةِ وَأَجْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ

Lahuma ajran, ajru-l-qarabati wa ajru-s-sadaqah.

"[Asked whether charity given to a husband and to orphans in one's care counts,] he said: They have two rewards, the reward of kinship and the reward of charity."

Narrated by Zaynab, the wife of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. Sahih Muslim 1000, Sahih al-Bukhari 1466

A short reflection

Giving within the family is not second-best charity. It is counted twice: once for the gift and once for the tie.
