Best companion, best neighbour
خَيْرُ الْأَصْحَابِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ خَيْرُهُمْ لِصَاحِبِهِ، وَخَيْرُ الْجِيرَانِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ خَيْرُهُمْ لِجَارِهِ
Khayru-l-ashabi inda-llahi khayruhum li-sahibih, wa khayru-l-jirani inda-llahi khayruhum li-jarih.
"The best of companions in the sight of Allah is the one best to his companion, and the best of neighbours is the one best to his neighbour."

A simple measure. Not the most pious in private; not the one with the longest tasbih. The best to the person beside him.
