Al Mu'min
The Infuser of Faith
The Affirmer of Truth, the Guarantor, the Giver of Faith.
Allah is Al-Mu'min, the One who witnessed for Himself that no one is God but Him, and the One who sent down Messengers and revealed His Books as clear proofs.
Mentions of Al Mu'min
From the Quran & Hadith
From the root hamza-mim-nun (أ م ن), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of being secure, safe, free from fear; being quiet and tranquil; granting protection and safeguard; being trusted and trustworthy; and believing in.
Meanings of Al-Mu'min
Each Name we study opens a door to deeper relationship with Allah. As we grow more acquainted with His essence, our connection with Him deepens and our hearts settle. Al-Mu'min is the quality that allows hearts to taste this feeling. He is the inspirer of faith and the giver of security. He is the One who sent down His Books and Messengers with clear signs for those who would listen.
He provides justice and security to His creation. He fulfils all His promises and never wrongs any creature: 'Indeed, Allah does not do injustice, [even] as much as an atom's weight; while if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward' (Quran 4:40). This sentiment is repeated in Surah Ghafir 40:17: 'This Day every soul will be recompensed for what it earned. No injustice today! Indeed, Allah is swift in account.'
The Quran repeatedly calls the believer *mu'min*. How then do we apply this Name to Allah Himself? The context differs entirely; what holds for one does not hold for the other — in reality nothing is comparable to Allah. *Mu'min* derives from *amān*, meaning security, surety, peace. When applied to the believer, it means the one who attests to what is true (the six articles of faith: belief in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgement, and His divine decree). When applied to Allah, it means the One who confirms Himself as the truth. So the believer is said to have security, safety, and protection from danger.
We are weak without Allah
Imam al-Ghazali offers an analogy: a man left alone in ruin, unable to move his limbs, pursued by enemies. Even if he could move, he has no weapons and no soldiers. Even with an army, he cannot guarantee victory. Then someone arrives, tends to his weakness, gives him a fortress, soldiers, weapons, and complete security. The only befitting name for such a one is 'the faithful.' Imam al-Ghazali continues: 'Man is basically weak by nature.' Compared to other creations we appear strong, but in many ways we are fragile. The Quran says: 'Allah wants to lighten for you [your difficulties]; and mankind was created weak' (Quran 4:28). There are many threats to our well-being — disease, hunger, war, accidents — and beyond the physical, the spiritual struggle of mastering desire, impulse, and emotion. Shaykh Tosun Bayrak adds that 'the worst of these enemies are our own egos and the accursed devil. The tyrants, the maligners, the envious, come after them.' Allah alone protects us from all forms of harm and adversity. The Quran recalls how the people of Quraysh had their fears removed and were granted prosperity after the du'a of Prophet Ibrahim (AS): true security is found only with Allah.

“He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior.”
Yurīdu-llāhu an yukhaffifa ʿankum, wa khuliqa-l-insānu ḍaʿīfā.
“Allah wants to lighten for you [your difficulties]; and mankind was created weak.”
Alladhī aṭʿamahum min jūʿin wa āmanahum min khawf.
“Who has fed them, [saving them] from hunger and made them safe, [saving them] from fear.”
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'By the One in whose hand my soul is, he will not enter Paradise whose neighbour is not safe from his harm.'
Knowing Al-Mu'min strengthens faith and trust in Allah. The Quran is full of His promises and rewards for those who believe — feel the immense gratitude that Allah Himself placed belief in your heart. Just as Allah is the source of safety and security, live this attribute by being a place of safety for others. The Prophet ﷺ said the one whose neighbour is not safe from his wrongdoing will not enter Paradise. Let people around you feel a blanket of comfort, warmth, and love radiating from you. Al-Mu'min also calls us to stand against injustice and oppression. If you witness wrong, do not stay silent — help in whatever capacity you can. Call on this Name in any prayer, but especially when you feel afraid or insecure: 'O Allah, You are Al-Mu'min — protect us from this evil, this enemy, this oppressor. Give us the strength to be firm in our faith and to never waver.'
Yā Mu'min, āminnā min kulli khawf
O Al-Mu'min, secure us from every fear.
