The hidden shirk in our lives
The Prophet ﷺ warned us most about shirk that creeps in unseen. Riya, attachment, fear of people. The forms we never call by name.
Outline
- 1
Major shirk and minor shirk
Major shirk is worshipping anything besides Allah. Minor shirk is what the Prophet ﷺ called the more frightening kind, because we do not see it. He said: what I fear most for you is the lesser shirk. They asked: what is it? He said: riya, showing off (Ahmad 23630).
- 2
Riya: the worship done for the audience
Praying differently when watched. Giving more sadaqah when the camera is on. Praising Allah in public, complaining in private. Riya does not erase the deed; it strips it of the reward. The deed went somewhere else.
- 3
Other quiet idols
Fear that paralyses you in front of a boss but not in front of Allah. Hope placed in a person who cannot deliver. Reliance on a number in a bank account. These are not minor mistakes; they are misplaced ibadah.
Closing line
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an ushrika bika wa ana a'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lam — O Allah, I seek refuge from associating partners with You knowingly, and I ask Your forgiveness for what I do not know.
Aisha (RA) reported: the Prophet's ﷺ khutbahs were of moderate length and his prayers were short (Sahih Muslim 869). Aim for fifteen to twenty minutes. Two sections separated by a brief sitting is the Sunnah pattern.
