Haya, the modesty that builds a Muslim
The Prophet ﷺ called haya a branch of iman. It is not shyness. It is the inner restraint that protects the heart, the tongue, and the eyes.
Outline
- 1
Modesty brings only good
The Prophet ﷺ said: haya brings nothing but good (Bukhari 6117). An axiom, not a tendency. Every increment of haya in a heart corresponds to an increment of khayr in the life.
- 2
Three directions of haya
Haya before Allah: not sinning in His full sight. Haya before yourself: refusing to do in private what you would not do in public. Haya before people: covering, lowering the gaze, speaking gently.
- 3
When haya leaves
The Prophet ﷺ said: if you have no haya, do as you wish (Bukhari 3483). Not a permission. A warning. Once the brake is gone, the car will not stop on its own.
Closing line
Allahumma istur awratina wa amin raw'atina — O Allah, conceal our shame and grant us security.
Aisha (RA) reported: the Prophet's ﷺ khutbahs were of moderate length and his prayers were short (Sahih Muslim 869). Aim for fifteen to twenty minutes. Two sections separated by a brief sitting is the Sunnah pattern.
