Shukr, the multiplier of blessings

Allah promises that gratitude opens the door to more. Three levels of shukr, and what stops most of us at the first.

Centrepiece
Surah Ibrahim 14:7

Outline

  1. 1

    The promise

Allah says: if you are grateful, I will surely increase you. And if you deny, indeed My punishment is severe (Ibrahim 14:7). Shukr is offered as a key. Most people leave the door unopened.

  2. 2

    Three levels of shukr

Shukr of the tongue (alhamdulillah). Shukr of the heart (recognising the favour comes from Him, not yourself). Shukr of the limbs (using the blessing for what He intends, not against Him). All three are required; one without the others is incomplete.

  3. 3

    Counting what most people miss

Most days we say alhamdulillah for the big things. The Prophet ﷺ taught duas for the smallest. For waking up. For wearing a garment. For finishing a meal. The Muslim who notices the small blessings has more to thank Allah for.

Closing line

Tonight, before sleep, list five blessings of this day no one else would have noticed. Begin the dhikr of shukr there.

Aisha (RA) reported: the Prophet's ﷺ khutbahs were of moderate length and his prayers were short (Sahih Muslim 869). Aim for fifteen to twenty minutes. Two sections separated by a brief sitting is the Sunnah pattern.
