MUI — Majelis Ulama Indonesia
Indonesia's halal certifier, government-backed. Widely trusted across Southeast Asia.
MUI (the Indonesian Council of Ulema) is the national halal certifier for Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country. Indonesian halal law requires that all food and beverage products sold in the country carry MUI certification by 2024 under the Halal Product Assurance Act.
MUI's standards permit reversible stunning but not the captive bolt pistol (which kills the animal before slaughter). Machine slaughter for poultry is permitted under conditions. The audits are particularly thorough for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and gelatin-source products, which is why MUI certification is sought by international brands aiming to access Indonesia's 230 million Muslim consumers.
Outside Indonesia, MUI certification is widely recognised — products with the MUI logo are accepted by halal regulators in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and most of Southeast Asia.
Slaughter policy at a glance
- Stunning: allowed
- Machine slaughter: case-by-case
- Slaughter must be by: a Muslim, invoking Allah's name (Bismillahi Allahu Akbar), via a single cut to the throat severing the windpipe, food-pipe, and both jugulars.
