JAKIM — Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia
Malaysia's government-run halal authority. Widely treated as the global gold standard, accepted in 80+ countries.
JAKIM (the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) is the federal halal regulator for Malaysia. Its certification covers food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, logistics, and slaughterhouses, and is recognised by halal authorities in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Turkey, Indonesia, the UK, and most of Europe.
JAKIM operates with a strict policy: no stunning unless it's reversible and the animal is alive at slaughter, all meat must be zabihah (hand slaughtered by a Muslim invoking Allah's name), and HACCP food-safety standards must be met alongside the religious requirements. Audits are annual with random unannounced visits.
If a product carries the JAKIM logo and you're shopping outside Malaysia, you can trust it with high confidence. Inside Malaysia, JAKIM is the only certifier whose logo can legally appear on packaging.
Slaughter policy at a glance
- Stunning: case-by-case
- Machine slaughter: not allowed
- Slaughter must be by: a Muslim, invoking Allah's name (Bismillahi Allahu Akbar), via a single cut to the throat severing the windpipe, food-pipe, and both jugulars.
