ICCV / AFIC — Islamic Center of Australia
Australia's recognised halal authority for export and domestic slaughter.
Australia is one of the largest halal meat exporters in the world. Most Australian halal certification is handled by AFIC (the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils) and a network of state-level Islamic Councils (ICCV in Victoria, ICNSA in NSW).
Australian halal slaughter standards permit reversible electrical stunning (which renders the animal unconscious but does not kill it before the cut). This is accepted by most Gulf importers including Saudi Arabia. Hand slaughter by a Muslim, invoking Allah's name, is required for every animal.
If you're in Australia, products carrying the AFIC or state Islamic Council halal logos are domestically certified. If you're elsewhere and you see an Australian halal stamp on imported beef or lamb, the product has likely cleared one of these bodies.
Slaughter policy at a glance
- Stunning: allowed
- Machine slaughter: not allowed
- Slaughter must be by: a Muslim, invoking Allah's name (Bismillahi Allahu Akbar), via a single cut to the throat severing the windpipe, food-pipe, and both jugulars.
